The gardens are the neighborhood community gardens. The Garden club members will plant and maintain the gardens. Non-club members, the neighborhood, and families of the Rogers elementary school are welcome to assist our club members during the summer months to care for our gardens.
Grade Level Learning
Each grade has an assigned bed. These beds are for each grade level teacher to supplement their math, science, et. al. curriculum by visiting the gardens. Examples are: Math - How many square feet of planting area is there. How many plants can be in each bed? Science - Perform a soil test and discuss the effects of adding fertilizer. What happens when the garden grows and is not watered and weeds not removed? Pulling out a plant and identify the root, stem, leaf and parts of a flower. How and when to harvest.
After School Program
Club members will be asked to present a plan for planting the gardens next Spring. What we should plant? How do we plant (seeds or seedlings)? Why do we want to plant? hen do we plant? Some of our after school meetings will be "working" meetings. Preparing for and organizing our Family Learning Center activities. Club members will then teach the FLC guests "how-to" make sunflower bird feeders, plant markers, etc.
Our garden club is an after school extension program of the Marshall County 4-H program. For more information on 4-H check out their web page at www.extension.iastate.edu/marshall/4h.
