Our first official meeting of the Rogers Garden Club met November 17 after school That evening participants got to know each other and the volunteer staff. They also learned more about the Iowa 4-H program. The group spent some time in the gardens picking the last few vegetables and herbs that remained in the gardens to take and use in a meal or snack. The participants also had the opportunity to plant and take home their very own spider plant. Shoots from the original plant were taken and repotted into smaller cups and watered before the kids took them home to watch them grown.

We recently had our first Family Learning Center night at Rogers. Family Learning Center nights are nights where families are invited to come back to school to either participate in scheduled programs and activities or come for an evening of family games and reading. Our first night this year was a kick off for the school year. Supper was provided for the families and playground games were organized by volunteers for families to play.
This was also to debut for the Rogers Gardens. Garden volunteers set up tables and gave out samples of recipes with ingredients straight from the gardens. Students and families sampled homemade coleslaw, two types of pickles, and two types of salsa. Each family also had the opportunity to sign their students up for our soon to start after school Garden Club. There is excitement in the air for these gardens and we are ready to share this success with everyone. We are so excited to share with you our adventures in gardening at Rogers Elementary School. Our gardens were added in the spring of 2016 and our first plantings went in at the beginning of June. Each grade level has their own garden bed that will eventually be cared for by them.
For this past summer, vegetables such as tomatoes, green beans, onions, cucumbers, squash and such were planted in the gardens. We also included items such as a variety of herbs and sunflowers. As the new school year gets started, an after-school group will begin meeting and learning with hands-on experiences the joys and benefits of gardening, composting, and preserving our own food. |
